THE SHOVEL and THE LABOR SPADE A brief story about Barbara G. Koopman, MD, PhD. It was perhaps a Thursday as I began what had become for me an almost daily event. From my San Francisco apartment I walked the six or so blocks to the residence of Nicolai Levashov. Once there I would experience an extraordinary session that would elevate me into another realm, a new place of being. As a beginner trainee of Nicolai’s, the sessions were part of his program for my health and development. I was ready with eager anticipation, but as I approached, I paused suddenly to observe a person on the sidewalk looking upward toward Nicolai’s third floor. Of course, many others came to visit Nicolai, but right away I could tell this was an extraordinary woman. Who could it be, I wondered. I remained observing as she stood looking upward, wearing a blue denim outfit and matching hat - what I later learned was a signature attire.
