Khatybov's "Bath School" and A Labour Spade 163 Methonic cycle, lunar cycle) is a 19-year calendar cycle showing the ratio of the lunar month and the solar year. The cycle uses the ratio of 19 tropical years = 235 synodic months . In each cycle, the distribution of the Moon phases is repeated accurately to several hours. The error in the Moon phase shift is 1 day within 219 years. The cycle is named after Greek astronomer and mathematician Methon , who discovered it in 432 BC , although it was known in ancient China (since 2260 BC) and Ancient Babylon. Little is known about Methon's life: he was the son of a man named Pausanias and escaped conscription, feigning madness; he was a contemporary of the playwright Aristophanes, who depicted him in his play "Birds» in the image of a funny geometer Methon considered the length of the year equal to 365.25 days, so 19 years make up 6939 days 18 hours , and 235 synodic months (lunations) equal to 6939 days. 16 hours 31 minutes (about 1.5 hours less). Since 19 years by 12 months give a total of 228 months, then every 7 years of the 19 cycle one additional month is added (that is, the cycle consists of 12 years by 12 months and 7 years by 13 months). It is believed that Meton added additional months in the 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th, 14th and 19th years of the cycle. The duration of the months was 29 or 30 days: all the years, containing 12 months, their duration alternately is 29 or 30 days, 6 additional months have duration of 30 days, and the seventh – 29 days. Total in the cycle are 110 months by 29 days and 125 months by 30 days. The Methon cycle served as the basis for making many lunar-solar calendars: the Greek lunar-solar calendar, Babylonian, Hebrew and some others. Beginning with the Middle Ages, the ORDINAL NUMBER OF THE YEAR IN THE METHON CYCLE (taking values from 1 to 19) there began to call the Golden Number.
