All that is required of us is to leave at least a little room for new knowledge and impressions. A young man came to see the tutor and said: – I want you to be my teacher. Help me to know the wisdom of life. – Well, – says the teacher, – Tell me about yourself. The disciple began to talk about his virtues; about how much he knew and how many things he was able to do. The teacher listened, and then gave him the first task. But the young man did not agree with him. He made up his mind that was a bad task, that he needed a completely different test. He went on talking about how much he had learned, and achieved considerable successes in his life. Yes, perhaps – in other spheres of life. But why not transfer them to the given situation?! Whatever the tutor suggested, the young man always had a more correct version of the problem solution. Then the wise man gave the youth a glass, and began to pour wine into it from the vessel. At first the glass was filled to half, then to the very edges, and the teacher went on pouring the wine into the glass. The young man looked calmly at first as the wine was running over the glass to the ground, but then he could not stand it any longer and screamed: – Stop pouring! We just waste wine! – Just like I'm wasting my time. I could teach you a lot, but you are already full, like this glass. The young man asked: – So, my past experience means nothing? – Your way of thinking made you what you are, gave you everything that you have today. But if you want more, your past experience will not lead you to the desired goal. Go away! And come back only when you are empty. When you are ready for new knowledge!
